Election 2016 No number of appeals will change our decision - EC

The EC disqualified twelve presidential nominees after the filing of nominations closed yesterday (October 10, 2016).

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that it will not consider appeals from disqualified presidential aspirants.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM Deputy Communications Director of the EC, Yusif Ayuba, said the Commission remains resolute in their decision.

“Why should we consider an appeal from any of the political parties? It is within the time frame; that is 29th and 30th of September, that is when you should submit your nomination forms, after 30th September, you cannot submit any corrected nomination forms.”

Ayuba explained that the EC did a diligent job hence there was no room for reconsideration.

“The Electoral Commission did its homework well. We did due diligence to the information that they provided and based on the requirement of law, we disqualified persons who did not meet those requirements.”

“We made it clear that they must make sure that they meet all the requirements in law to be able to qualify to become candidates. For the forms that they submitted to the Electoral Commission, we went through it and we realised a number anomalies. Those who brought the forms early we notified them to come and pick them and make sure that they do the correction and resubmit them within the stipulated time in law,” he added.

The presidential nominees include All Peoples Congress’s Hassan Ayariga; Dr Edward Mahama of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Dr Agyenim Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP), Kofi Akpaloo of the Independent People’s Party (IPP), Kwabena Adjei of the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

The others include: Dr Henry Herbert Lartey of the Great Consolidate Popular Party (GCPP), Richard Nixon Tetteh (United Development Systems Party), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Ward Brew of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker, an independent candidate, and Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Akwesi Adae Odike of the United Progressive Party’s nomination is on hold pending a court case.

Madam Osei cited some irregularities on their forms which include fraudulent signatures,  the absence of required number of signatures, the improper filing of nomination forms among others as the reasons for their disqualification.

Meanwhile, nominations of President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Akufo-Addo of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP),  Ivor Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Jacob Osei Yeboah – an independent aspirant have been accepted by the EC.
