NDC to open nomination for Abuakwa North constituency tomorrow

This follows the resignation of the party's parliamentary nominee, Anthony Osei Gyimah, on Tuesday. According to the Eastern regional secretary of the party, Oliver Mark Kevor the nomination will be opened from Wednesday to Friday.

This follows the resignation of Anthony Osei Gyimah, who submitted his letter to the regional executives on Tuesday. He stepped down barely four months to the election. His resignation has left some party members in the constituency shocked because they believed “he could give the NPP candidate a run for his money.”

Regional Secretary of the NDC Oliver Mark Kevor, who confirmed this to pulse.com.gh said “the regional chairperson conveyed an emergency regional executive committee meeting, for which we discussed and accepted his resignation. We also forwarded the information to the national secretariat for advice, and we have decided to open fresh nomination on Wednesday to Friday, and then we close nomination and prepare for the re-run of the primary for Abuakwa North”.

As to whether the NDC will be ready to contest in a constituency which is largely a seat for the NPP, with a new candidate in such short time, Kevor said the party would do better than it did in 2012 irrespective of which candidate wins the re-run.

“We have prepared ourselves irrespective of which candidate. Even though the candidate brings unto the board its own strength and unique traits that will stir on the agenda, but largely the party is prepared the constituency executives are so much united. The various stakeholders in the party are also working very hard on the ground”.

He argued that the by-election held in the constituency after the death of J.B Danquah-Adu saw a low turnout which he believes is a sign of apathy towards the NPP.

“Already there is apathy in the NPP, remember the just ended by-election which we refused to participate, they had just about 28% turnout. An indication that even among the NPP most of them rejected the NPP and that is a plus for us. The dynamics on the ground favours the NDC largely and we hope that whoever steps into his shoes brings on board his own strengths for us to capture the seat” he added.
