Nana Addo outlines plans for the youth

The flag-bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the youth not to lose hope.

Nana Addo says the youth should not lose hope

Delivering a speech at the 15th anniversary celebration of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), at the Mensah Sarbah Hall of the University of Ghana on Wednesday, Nana Addo stated that the National Democratic Congress has failed the youth. He cited the high levels of unemployment and excessive government borrowing among others as his basis.

Nana Addo however urged the youth not to see the “tragedy” as their “destiny”. He assured that the NPP will deliver on its promise to the youth and the people of Ghana.

He indicated that the NPP government will invest in the nation’s institutions of learning to acquire new technology in order to provide skills and education to the people who are being left out of the job market.

“To you, the students of Ghana, I say, don’t lose hope. I have great news for you, though. There is something great coming. My message for you, our young people, is this: don’t see this tragedy as your destiny. There is a brighter future for you. You have the energy, you have the passion and you have the drive to make the change Ghana deserves happen.

“I am encouraged in my thinking by the continuing creativity and sense of enterprise of several of Ghana’s young people. This reinforces my unshakeable belief in the prospects of our nation, the Black Star of Africa.

“Our solution will be principally four-fold: first, we will stabilise the economy and bring back the confidence the private sector needs to thrive. Second, we will come down heavily on corruption, instil fiscal discipline and invest the savings made in areas that can create jobs or open up the economy for greater vibrancy.

“We will do so by developing and expanding rapidly our public infrastructure, with value for money at the heart of its financial arrangements and the active support and participation of the private sector,” he said..

Nana Addo continued: “No nation can afford to marginalise the youth, the very group that makes up the chunk of its labour force. This is something we expected leaders to know. We will be learning from Germany, which has a relatively low level of youth unemployment, to prioritise high-quality vocational courses, apprenticeships and links with industry.

“Your next NPP government will be a government that promotes policies that add value, because that is the only way we can create a large pool of sustainable good jobs with good pay.

“On the back of an expanding and diversified agriculture, we will set Ghana on a solid platform for industrialisation, which will see economic growth matched by job creation. You know we can do it".
