Speaking to Pulse.com.gh, Karen Hendrickson, Director of Advocacy and Programmes at the IEA said her outfit is currently in talks with the various presidential candidates to enable it to kickstart the debate.

“I can tell you that our first debate is going to be in Accra on the 22nd of November, and it is going to be at the Kempinski Hotel and our second debate will be on the 29th of November at Best Western hotel in Takoradi,” she said.

All other things being equal, the presidential candidates expected to partake in the debates will be the flagbearers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) President John Mahama, Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) Ivor Kobina Greenstreet and an independent candidate, Jacob Yeboah.

The others are the flagbearers of the Progressive People’s Party, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom; the National Democratic Party’s Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, and the People’s National Convention’s Edward Mahama.

The Executive Director at the IEA, Jean Mensah had earlier accused the Communication Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah of blocking President Mahama’s participation in the presidential debates.

She said Omane Boamah has failed to open discussions with the IEA in spite of a directive contained in a letter written by the President’s Secretary.

The ruling NDC had earlier raised its misgivings from the start about the approach being adopted by the IEA for this year’s presidential debate.

The IEA had indicated that it was considering holding a separate debate for the presidential candidates of the two major political parties; NDC and NPP.

But some political parties, mainly the NDC subsequently accused the IEA of failing to consult them before announcing plans for their presidential debate.
