The presidential nominee of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, has assured residents of the Brong Ahafo Region who have lost their investment in rogue microfinance institutions that he will retrieve their monies for them when he wins this year’s elections.

“If before the conduct of the December 7 election, President Mahama’s government is unable to retrieve your monies from DKM and others for you, I can assure you that, God-willing, when I win, I will retrieve your monies for you,” Akufo-Addo pledged at a rally in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Although the government has begun payment, the affected victims say it is woefully inadequate.

DKM, for instance, squandered GHC77 million in the deposits of its customers in risky business ventures which are subsidiaries of the company.

At a separate rally  in Sunyani, Akufo-Addo repeated his pledge to refund the monies of the microfinance victims.

His promise to refund the monies has drawn sharp criticism from a sector of the public.

While many say it is a mere political promise to win votes, others are questioning where he is going to get the money to make the payments.
