Ghanaians can have their social media; it will not be blocked - Police
There was public uproar when the Inspector General of Police, in a press interaction, said blocking social media during the November polls was an alternative the police was considering in a way to prevent troublemakers who might want to cause mayhem and disrupt the election process.
Many criticised the police for thinking about banning a platform it does not even use.
However, speaking at Blogging Ghana’s Blog camp on Saturday, the Director of Communications at the Police Service, Cephas Arthur said the IGP’s comments were misconstrued.
“The IGP used the word alternatives but it looks as if nobody heard the other alternatives that he mentioned because nobody is discussing that. This was not part of his speech. It was a kind of off the top of his head answer.

“Let us not be alarmed. The IGP is not about to block social media on election day and we are going to have our social media,” Cephas Arthur said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has announced that it would be reviving its social media accounts ahead of the 2016 general elections.
According to the service’s director of public affairs; Superintendent Cephas Arthur, the defunct online accounts will be revived in the coming weeks to help the police engage the public.
“We have a strong ICT department at the police. But so far, their work has been involved in investigating [crimes committed with new technologies] and not engaging people on social media. We are working very hard and soon, we will be strongly represented on social media," he said.
