The Electoral Commission (EC) will today (Monday) resume the transfer of votes in Asunafo South and Suhum in the Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions respectively.

The head of communications at the EC Eric Dzakpasu said the Ghana Police Service has assured them of maximum security in such areas.

Speaking on Ghana Television, Dzakpasu said “violence is a taboo when it comes to elections and it undermines credible elections. So we are really worried because we want to ensure the safety of the stakeholders. In consultation and collaboration with the police, we are assured of adequate police security, so we will resume the exercise for both Asunafo and Suhum on Monday.”

He however, indicated that the exercise continued at Buipe in the Northern Region the day after the riot there.

EC offices in various parts of the country have recently recorded attacks over some disagreements on the transfer of vote processes in their respective areas.

The Electoral Commission office in Suhum was closed down for investigations to be conducted following a raid at the office on Thursday (September 23, 2016) night.

Clashes between supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Gonja District has led to the closure of the EC office in that area.

Officers of the commission are said to have sought refuge at the police station after the two rivalry parties went on a rampage at the premises of the office over the on-going voter transfer exercise.

A similar incident happened in Buipe in the Northern Region where a clash between the NPP and NDC led to the shutdown of the EC office in the area.
