Political rallies in the Ashanti region have been suspended following the official announcement of the death of Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem.

As Ashanteman mourns the late Queen mother, a ban on drumming and noise-making has been banned until she is laid to rest.

Drumming and noise making are a key feature of political rallies in Ghana.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the other hand said the death of the Ashantehema is a great blow to the party.

Nonetheless, both parties have adopted 'house to house' campaign to canvass for votes.

Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II passed away at 109 years of age and was the biological mother of the current occupant of the Golden Stool. She was the Asantehemaa for 39 years.

Nana Afia Kobi was enstooled in 1977 as the 13th queen mother of the Asante Kingdom since 1695 after the late Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II who reigned from 1945 to 1977.

She saw the reign of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, as Asantehene who reigned from 1970 to 1999.
