NDC, NPP clash over Kennedy Agyepong’s claim

The National Women’s Organizer of the NPP, Otiko Djaba defended the legislator saying his claims must be investigated rather than condemned. But responding to Djaba’s request, National Vice Chairperson of the NDC, Anita De Soso said the NPP is noted for disrespecting women.

Mr. Kennedy Agyepong

Government officials and some gender-based groups condemned his comments. These include the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur and Foreign Affairs minister Hannah Tetteh. Even though some people have called on him to apologise he said he would rather reveal more about the EC boss if he pushed any further.

Meanwhile the National Women’s Organizer of the NPP, Otiko Djaba defended the legislator saying his claims must be investigated rather than condemned. She said on Accra based Citi FM that “We need to focus on why he said it because he is not an ordinary person. He is a member of our legislature. He should not be condemned outright but we should find out if there is any merit in what he said or not…For the sake of our country, for the sake of democracy, for the sake of peace and transparency in the election. There is no smoke without fire and this honorable man will not come and make that statement with no reason.”

But responding to Djaba’s request, National Vice Chairperson of the NDC, Anita De Soso said the NPP is noted for disrespecting women. Speaking on Accra FM, she said “It is the party’s position, and since it is their position it is no problem. They can disgrace us because we are women, but since we have God, we will say nothing. It is the NPP’s sub-culture to tarnish the image of women, so, we have resorted to using it in our campaigns against them.”

She said she uses their comments against women as part of her campaign speech anywhere she goes. She believes this will prevent more women from voting for them.

She said “for me, I tour the country; I do not remain in the city. I am informing the women in all the rural communities [I visit]. So, let the spirit enter them [members of the NPP] so they keep insulting women and the women will keep making up their minds to vote for us.”
