Police fire tear gas at "new voters register" demonstrators

The police fired tear gas when demonstrators tried to use unapproved routes to the EC

Police fired tear gas to disperse over a thousand Let my Vote Count Alliance demonstrators who tried to get to the premises of the Electoral Commission through unapproved routes.

Pulse.com.gh reporter, Mildred Europa Taylor reports that some people were beaten in the process while some others have been arrested.

Over 300 police officers are trying to restore calm at what appears to be a very chaotic scene.

The police before the demonstration had ruled out a wish by the group to picket at the premise of the commisison.

But convener of the group David Asante in media interviews promised to defy the order by the police.

An attempt by the group to veer off into the premises of the EC  using the Kojo Thompson road was fiercely resisted by the police who has classified the EC office as  a security zone.

Superintendent Cephas Arthur had early on told Pulse.com.gh that the march was very peaceful.

The demonstrators are calling for new voters register.

NPP national youth organiser Sammy Awuku told Pulse.com.gh that an audited register instead of new one will not suffice.

The group is backing calls by the NPP  for a new register.
