Justice Sophia Akuffo has received bipartisan support for her nomination as Ghana’s new Chief Justice.

She was appointed on Friday by President Akufo-Addo to replace Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, who is due to retire next in June.

Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu said she has distinguished herself as an independent minded judge.

"She comes to the bench with some rich experience,” he said.

“She is taking over from Justice Georgina Wood, undoubtedly one of few Ghanaian women who have dedicated themselves to duty,
” she said.

The First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former Attorney General, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, in a message said she was “truly delighted by the choice of Sophia Akuffo as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.”

She added: “She [Sophia Akuffo] has excellent credentials and has impeccable gender credentials all her working life.”

In appointing her, the president urged her to be firm and fair in the discharge of her duties.

“I expect discipline, fairness, integrity and the continuing modernization of judicial activities to be the hallmarks of her tenure as Chief Justice if she is so endorsed by the constitutional bodies,” he said.
