AMA Boss, Oko Vanderpuije goes to the Vatican

Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has successfully completed and handed over 11 Millennium City Schools (MCS) for use within the metropolis

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA), Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, is leading mayors from Africa and of African descent to attend a twin conference at the Casina Pio IV in the Vatican, Rome, from Tuesday, July 21-22, 2015.

The invitation, which is at the instance of the Pontifical Academy of Science and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, will bring together over 80 mayors of the world and local government leaders and other urban development practitioners to consider how cities can derive the implementation of the three new sustainable development agenda of empowering people, eradicating poverty and protecting human dignity and shared prosperity.

Dr Vanderpuije is billed to speak on the theme: “Modern Slavery and Climate Change - the commitment of the cities and the “People and Planet; Achieving Sustainable Development in our cities.”

Voted the Best Mayor of Africa 2014 and currently the President of the Global Alliance of Mayors and leaders of Africa and of African descent, Dr Okoe Vanderpuije, will also share his commitment in the provision of quality education which ultimately empowers the citizenry and his drive for excellence in all endeavours with his Holiness, Pope Francis.

This will also be a preamble to the General Debate on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) by his Holiness Pope Francis at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September to adopt the Post-2015 SDGS by all concerned city authorities.

Expectations

Sharing his expectations at the twin conferences with the Daily Graphic yesterday, Dr. Vanderpuije, who is a firm believer that development challenges confronting the Accra Metropolis require no compromises in the enforcement of existing laws and legislations, was confident the outcome of the conferences would be a useful learning curve for all the participants.

Achievements

He is hoping to share his experiences on the management of solid and liquid waste, education, health services and public health as well as revenue/finances within the metropolis.

On education, the metropolis under the direction of Dr Vanderpuije has ended the shift system of education in Accra.

He has successfully completed and handed over 11 Millennium City Schools (MCS) for use within the metropolis

98 MCS are also currently on-going in various communities within the metropolis.

Supplied and distributed over 14,000 furniture to basic schools within the metropolis within four years.

On liquid waste management, the metropolis has completed the Legon Treatment Plant, rehabilitated six pump stations, Mudor treatment plant, sewer lines from Dansoman through Latebiokorshie, Mataheko, Korle-Gonno to the Mudor Treatment Plant and work is still on going with the  installation of digesters at the Lavender Hill (Siamson Project).

Relatedly, on solid waste management, under the watch of Dr Vanderpuije,  the metropolis has introduced Polluter Pay Principle in 2011, collaborated with Environmental Service Providers (ESPA) to provide free bins to the 117,000 houses in the metropolitan area, acquired 20 Bolla Taxis for refuse collection within the interior parts of the communities, capping of landfill site at Achimota Old Dump site, Mallam market , Oblogo Old dump site.

The AMA has also established the Sanitation Standards implementation Committee (SSIC) in all 76 electoral areas, set up three sanitation courts and established two more sanitation courts at Osu Klottey and provided an ambulance for the Mamprobi Polyclinic and provided Security light to Mamprobi Polyclinic.
