Ghana's Domestic Violence Act to be passed in July

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has said it has completed processes on the drafting of the Legislative Instrument (L.I) to give realistic meaning to the Domestic Violence Act 732, of 2007.

The Act was one of the essential acts passed by Parliament in the fight against women rights abuses and violations. However, it appeared insignificant due to the absence of an L.I to support it.

But, speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur said she is hopeful the Domestic Violence Bill would be passed into law in July.

"We are looking at the L.I. for the Domestic Violence Act. I'm happy to announce that it has been finalised and we have a validation. The Subsidiary Legislation Committee of parliament led by O.B. Amoah have looked at it and the Attorney General has submitted final documents. And just yesterday I signed off a letter to the Attorney General. And so hopefully by July it should be passed by government," she added.

The Minister's comment comes at a day when Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark 'Zero Discrimination Day', a worldwide event which celebrates everyone's right to a dignified life, regardless gender, sexuality, nationality, race, disability or even illness.

Scores of women and girls in every region of the world continue to experience violence and abuse and are unable to exercise their rights or gain access to health-care services, education or employment.

The 'Zero Discrimination Day', which is observed on March 1, 2014, was first celebrated in 2014.
