Messaging app hits 549 million users

The figure points at a 9.8 percent increase from the apps 500 million milestone at the end of 2014, and a 39 percent increase from Q1 2014.

Tencent, in its Q1 2015 earnings report on Tuesday, reported that its messaging app WeChat now has 549 million monthly active user (MUAs).

The figure points at a 9.8 percent increase from the apps 500 million milestone at the end of 2014, and a 39 percent increase from Q1 2014.

Tencent did not provide data as regards a geographic breakdown of where WeChat users are concentrated, which makes it hard to be sure if the service has had any major impact beyond the walls of China.

In contrast, competitor apps like Whatsapp (800 million MUAs), Viber (236 million MUAs), and Line (205 million MUAs) have appeared to have a much more global presence.

The company however, is still a global presence, saying in the report that the messaging app team “continued to drive user engagement in selected overseas markets.”

Tencent’s online game revenue, which covers social gaming on WeChat and QQ, a well as PC-based games, increased by 28 percent year on year to $2.15 billion in the first quarter of 2015.

No figure was given for WeChat’s revenues which comes from social gaming purchases, in-app purchases such as emojis, brand and service accounts as well as e-commerce and e-payments related income.
