Ghana to become a target for Jihadists - Mustapha Hamid

This follows Ghana's decision to house two ex-Guantanamo detainees in the country.

Islamic scholar and University of Cape Coast lecturer, Mustapha Hamid has warned that Ghana could be a target of attack from Jihadists following the decision to house two ex-Guantanamo detainees in the country.

The two ex-detainees: Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby, arrived in Ghana on Thursday January 7, 2016 for a two-year stay as part of a deal reached between the United States of America and the Government of Ghana.

Bin Atef is an admitted member of the Taliban and fought for Usama bin Laden, while Al-Dhuby trained with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Some Ghanaians have rejected moves by government to accept two Guantanamo Bay prisoners into the country, describing it as disappointing and a threat to the country's security.

Government has subsequently assured Ghanaians that it has taken all the necessary security measures to ensure the safety of citizens and security of the nation.

But, Islamic scholar, Mustapha Hamid has indicated that Ghana's decision to accept the two detainees exposes the country to attack from Jihadists.

"Part of Jihadist ideology is that the friend of your enemy is your enemy. That is a non-negotiable aspect of the ideology...This act is an act of complexity, in that we have shown ourselves to be allies of America. After the 9/11 bombings, Osama Bin Laden says all those who died pay taxes to the American government," Mustapha Hamid told Accra-based Citi FM.

He further debunked claims that Ghana would rather be at the mercy of the Jihadists following her decision to accept the two detainees.

"It is not true that these people will see Ghana as sympathetic. In fact, what we have done have just given us out as allies of America and therefore in the eyes of jihadist ideology have become legitimate target," he added.

He has therefore asked President Mahama to "politely tell the Americans that we don't want an I'm sure the Americans would understand considering the fact that we are a sovereign nation and say we would take them back and find a better place."
