Heavy security at Aveyime after okada riders clash with police

Two okada riders passed away on Friday in an accident after they had attempted escaping from the police.

A team of officers from the Regional police headquarters in Ho has been dispatched to Aveyime near Sogakope in the Volta region to restore after some motor riders clashed with the police.

Some commercial motorbike transport operators otherwise known as okada riders stormed the Aveyime police station on Friday after two of their members passed away in an accident in their attempt to escape from the police.

The police were on the streets as part of efforts of clamping down on the activities of okada riders that flout motor and traffic regulations.

The okada drivers in their anger besieged the police station and attempted to force their way through.

They even burnt some car tyres in front of the police station in the process.

The Director-General of Public Affairs of the police in the region, ASP David Eklu has since issued a statement saying that the issue is under investigation.

The statement further indicated that the police will engage with community leaders at Aveyime in order to restore law and order.
