Ken Agyapong - NPP Will Stay In Opposition Forever

Mr Ken Agyapong has unleashed verbal attacks on the NPP for their handling of the Osafo Maafo leaked tape.

The Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, Mr Kennedy Agyapong has unleashed verbal attacks on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their handling of the Osafo Maafo leaked tape.

According to him, there was nothing wrong with what Osafo Maafo was quoted to have said in the tape and that it was wrong for the NPP to disassociate themselves from the comments of their stalwart.

In an interview on Adom TV, the firebrand NPP MP condemned his political party [NPP] and said they will continue to be in opposition as long as they continue with their “book-long” behaviour.

Noted for being a brash oftentimes in the NPP and speaking in the local language twi, interspersed with English, Mr Agyapong described members of the NPP as senseless and “fools.” They are “bogus,” he said and expressed regret being a member of the party.

He said because of their “book-long” attitude, “NPP will stay in opposition forever.”

He expressed disappointment over why Osafo Maafo in a conversation with his own political party people would be recorded secretly and leaked to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). He said there was no way members of the NDC would go to a meeting and record themselves secretly and leak to their opponent.

“Do you know the things they [NDC] say, the strategies they put in place?”

Why then would someone from the NPP Council of Elders in the Eastern Region, when they met Osafo Maafo and he was giving them strategy, he would be secretly recorded. He described such a move as senseless.

He recalled that when Nana Akufo-Addo was quoted as being tribalistic with his “Yen Akanfuor” speech, he spoke to NPP members but someone recorded it and leaked it.

Again he asked, has anybody in the NDC ever recorded any of their meetings and leaked it to the NPP? “I am not sure the NPP is ready to come to power.”

He said issues of hardships and difficulties in the country have been relegated to the background only for NPP people to be recording themselves secretly and leaking it to the NDC to do propaganda with it and therefore described NPP members as, “idiots, stupid people. I don’t know why I belong to that political party. They are idiots,” he said.

He condemned the party for disassociating itself from Osafo Maafo with regard to the leaked tape and said there was nothing wrong with Mr Osafo Maafo’s comments especially as he did not insult anybody.

He said people were proud of their ethnic lineage irrespective of being Ewes, Gas or Northerners. “Why is it that when someone expresses himself of being a proud Akan, people have a problem with that? Are Akans not human too?”

He accused the NDC government of being discriminatory with recruitment into the police service, for instance on ethnic grounds and yet no one was talking about it.

"Why are we being tribalistic?" he questioned.

Mr Agyapong said even though he was an Akan, about 80 per cent of workers in his real estate business were from the Volta region, “because they can do the job.” He does not have a problem with anyone but NPP members should be proud that every political party has a stronghold and that the NDC should not be faulted for having the Volta region as their stronghold.

“I can also confidently say that my stronghold is in the Ashanti region. There is nothing wrong with that but when it happens the party disassociates itself.”

“What did Osafo Maafo say? What is the truth, have you sat down with the man…common sense we don’t have it.”

Mr Agyapong recalled his comments in 2012 where he was accused of inciting Akan’s against Ewes and was subsequently charged with treason felony but was later discharged by the court.

He said the court did not discharged him because what he said had been “twisted” but after the court listened to the tape, he was discharged.
