Tipper truck skids and kills pregnant woman, 5yr-old girl in Berekum

Residents of Berekum witnessed a tragedy at mid-day on Wednesday when a tipper truck skidded off the road, in the driver’s attempt to save someone who crossed his path and killed a pregnant woman and a girl-child, aged about five years.

The truck which was loaded with sand broke the wall of a house and another wall of the Total Filling Station before stopping but not before killing the two in the process and injuring a 37-year old man identified as Bugri Tia.

The Berekum District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Andrews Boadu-Ekumah told Graphic Online that police had mounted a search for the driver who absconded after the incident.

According to him, the deceased were yet to be identified and it was not known whether the young girl was related to the pregnant woman.

Chief Supt Boadu-Ekumah explained that eyewitnesses told the police that the truck, with registration number GR 345-12 entered Berekum from the Sunyani direction and skidded off the road as a result of the driver’s attempt to save someone who crossed his path.

He said the driver hit the wall of a nearby house, crossed another adjoining road and killed the victims before breaking the wall of the filling station.

The blood of the victims was splashed on the road drawing a large crowd of onlookers who wailed uncontrollably.
