Police mistakenly shoot dead two brothers at Mampong

Police in Mampong in the Ashanti region have mistakenly shot and killed two people of the Mampong Midwifery Training College.

The incident happened at dawn on Wednesday February 10, 2016, killing Francis Benneh, a teacher at the Midwifery and Health Assistants Training School (HATS) in the town and his brother.

Confirming the incident to Accra-based Joy FM, the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police, ASP Yusif Mohammed Tanko said the police had a distress call about a robbery incident at Mampong.

He said the police, on arriving at the scene spotted the two brothers on their motorcycle and fired at them, believing they were robbers fleeing arrest.

"It is a very serious matter and an unfortunate one as well. The Command is not happy about it at all. As I speak to you, a delegation has been sent by the Command to ascertain the situation and also investigate the matter and if the officers who went on that particular duty are found culpable, then the necessary action will be taken against them," ASP Tanko added.
