Steve Elkington: I was banned, fined for Michael Sam tweet

Steve Elkington said he earned a two-week ban and a fine for his tweet about NFL player Michael Sam.

One-time major winner Steve Elkington revealed he was suspended by the PGA Tour for two weeks and fined $10,000 for a tweet about gay NFL player Michael Sam.

Elkington, a 10-time PGA Tour winner but not since 1999, posted about Sam in February 2014, but only revealed his sanction in an interview with Golf Magazine.

"ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine... No one else expected to throw today," Elkington's tweet read.

The Australian, now 52, explained he was trying to point out his view ESPN were saturating of the fact Sam was a homosexual player.

"They kept calling him 'the gay athlete'. 'The gay, the gay, the gay'," Elkington said.

"I don't even know if you get it or not. People forget that I did 250 cartoons on Twitter - every day for a year. They forget all the good stuff I do.

"I did like 67 'toons last year for the Champions Tour, promoted the tour, put them on my show, did all that. No s***, they couldn't care less. One thing, boom, and it's all they remember."

Sam was on the roster at the St Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys, but has since signed with Canadian Football League team the Montreal Alouettes.

Elkington won the PGA Championship in 1995, edging Colin Montgomerie in a play-off.
