Govt denies reports of Ghanaians facing execution in Libya

Media reports have indicated that some Ghanaians were arrested for loitering around town in Libya and have been detained in prison in a Libyan town called Pejora.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh, has denied reports of some 300 Ghanaians facing execution in Libya.

According to reports, the said detainees have been in prison for the past three months awaiting the intervention of officials from the Ghana Embassy.But, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh, said such reports cannot be confirmed.

“The concerns of Ghanaians in Libya are usually brought to the Missions attention by the Ghana Association there for Consular assistance.“We are informed that there are four Ghanaian citizens in detention awaiting deportation, and our Staff are following up on their cases.“However today we've had staff check the camps referenced & the courts to check on any cases pending against any Ghanaian citizens.“Ghana currently has no Embassy in Tripoli, we moved our Embassy to Malta over a year ago among other reasons, due to safety concerns.“Today, there has been a story making the rounds alleging 300 Ghanaians are awaiting execution in Libya. This cannot be confirmed,” she added.
