Social services Ministry of Gender registers 500 aged under health insurance

As part of measures to enable the aged and the elderly in the country have easy access to health care services, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social protection in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority have registered about 500 aged people in the Ho Municipality on the National health Insurance Scheme.

The initiative is also aimed at providing them with guaranteed fundamental human rights and liberties.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur underscored that easy access to social services for the aged, relieves them of stress and frustration which deteriorate their conditions.

She noted that the Ministry among other things is to ensure mainstreaming of issues of the elderly persons into the development agenda.

She disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed Between Ghana and Denmark to provide geriatric care services in Ghana.

According to her this will be incorporated into the main nursing and medical curriculum in Ghana’s nursing colleges to attend to the aged appropriately.

Nana Oye Lithur announced that the urban card registration will be extended to the region.

The former Assemblyman for Wusu Dome, Anthony Bruce appealed to the Ministry for Gender, Children and social protection to help address the food needs of the lepers.

He disclosed that the cured lepers are served one meal a day from Monday to Friday and that on Saturday and Sunday they fend for themselves.

The Ho Municipal Public Relations Officer of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), George Tasiame urged all beneficiaries of the scheme to take good care of their cards and visit their offices for renewal when expired.

The Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) registration was also opened to register cured lepers who were not under the program at the Ho Leprosarium.

The event was also used to present some assorted items such as pieces of cloths, sugar food to the lepers.
