The Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver has been arrested on corruption charges.

Silver was arrested on Thursday, January 22, by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after being accused of using his office to solicit millions in bribes and kickbacks.

According to U.S. Attorney, Preet Bharara, the longtime Speaker has been charged with five criminal counts following a protracted corruption investigation.
Upon his arrest in Lower Manhattan, the Speaker reportedly said: “I hope I’ll be vindicated.”
Silver has been a member of the Assembly since 1977 and rose to become its most influential Democrat after assuming the position of Speaker in 1994.
