Inmates Feared Dead, Security Men Injured

Some inmates at the Kumasi Central prisons have reportedly tried to escape custody after some sections of the building were set on fire.

Two prison inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison are feared dead while some security officials sustained severe injures following clashes last night at the detention centre.

The security men were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after being hit by projectiles as the prisoners attempted jail break in the cause of the clash after fire broke out at the facility.

Some of the prisoners who attempted to escape were hit by gunshot and feared dead as heavily armed police and prison guards responded to the prison break to restore calm and the area cordoned off.

Some of the inmates attacked the prison guards with bricks, stones, sachet water and other objects.

The prisoners had been evacuated from their cells after the fire outbreak.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
