Under Clause 1 of the Bill, an Information Officer must within 14 days respond to a person’s request for information.

But if the person seeking for information wants it to be treated with urgency, then he must state reasons.

However, some members of parliament have argued that the clause may affect the smooth application of the Bill, as it gives too much discretionary power to an Information Officer.

This clause created controversy in Parliament even before it went on recess. The situation has still not changed as it reconvenes.

The Speaker of Parliament however assured that all will be done to ensure speedy passage of the Bill into law.

Parliament began the consideration of the Bill which has been before the House since 2013.

The general public will have legal access to information such as government documents, data, reports, and so on, once the bill is passed.
