Government to allow prison inmates make phone calls

The ministry of Interior has signed a contract with MSM communication to introduce telecom services in some selected prisons to facilitate communication between the inmates and their families, friends and lawyers in a controlled manner

The Interior Ministry has announced plans to introduce telecom services in some selected prisons across the country.

According to the sector minister, Mark Woyongo, the move will facilitate communication between inmates and their relatives, as well as their legal counsels.

The Ghana Prisons Service, which is expected to reform and rehabilitate prisoners to  ensure their welfare, has been plagued with several challenges including issues of overcrowding, inaccessibility to legal services, among others.

The state and civil society organisations have often come to the aid of inmates of these prisons, but more needs to be done.
