Togbe Afede consented to NDC committee offer – Asiedu Nketia

Togbe Afede XIV declined serving on the committee on the basis that the Constitution and the Code of Ethics of the National House of Chiefs do not allow chiefs to be deeply involved in partisan politics

 

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has stated that Togbe Afede XIV had earlier consented to be a member of the economic committee of the party.

The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs declined serving on the committee on the basis that, the Constitution and the Code of Ethics of the National House of Chiefs do not allow chiefs to be deeply involved in partisan politics.

“As you know the constitution bans chiefs from participating in politics and indeed the National House of Chiefs has adopted a code of conduct which excludes chiefs from participating in active politics. Someone tried to find out from me about my availability and I did point out this fact that chiefs are excluded from participating in partisan politics,” Togbe Afede said on Citi FM.

But Mr. Asiedu Nketia insists the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV had earlier given his consent to be a member of the economic committee of the party.

“We deliberately sent someone to inform him of our intention to include him on the committee and the indication we had was positive.“But maybe there was some gab in the communication but as of the time we were inaugurating the committee, we knew that he had agreed to serve.“But we respect that fact that he is a chief and it may be difficult for him to be on the committee so we respect his views and we will take it into account and act accordingly,” he said on Kasapa 102.3FM’s Anopa Kasapa.

The NDC economic team is expected to strategize and oversee the financial activities of the governing party as the 2016 elections approaches.
