Hundreds of residents of Somanya in the Eastern Region on Friday stormed the office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over what they described as anomalies with their billing.

According to the angry residents, they are being cheated by the service provider as they have over the last few months experienced a huge jump in their bills.

They claim that the ECG has failed to address the problem despite several complaints.

But the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of ECG in the region, Theresa Osabutey, has explained that the power distributor cannot be blamed for the irregularities.

“The issue they are demonstrating about has more or less nothing to do with ECG. What we know is that they were being billed by VRA and the meters they were using, at a point, they came around to replace the meters. And when they replaced the meters, the customers started complaining that they were paying more than they used to pay…” she explained to Accra-based Citi FM.
