Ghana bought electricity from Cote D'Ivoire for Christmas -ACEP

Ghanaians enjoyed relative stability in power supply during the festive season, signaling the country was now generating enough power to meet demand.

Pulse.com.gh has learnt that Ghana bought 250 megawatts of power from Cote D’ivore in December to help ease the loadshedding during the Christmas festivities.

According to players in the power sector, the country was generating more than 1900 megawatts in December while peak demand was around 1700 megawatts after industry went on break.

But the Executive Director of Africa Centre for Energy Policy Mohammed Amin Adam in an interview with  Pulse.com.gh said,” Ghana bought 100 megawatts from the Cote D’ivoire on December 30 and on the following day (December 31) Ghana bought an additional 150 megawatts to ensure stable power supply”.

This is the third time Ghana has bought power from Cote D’ivoire within 2015.

Ghana first in February bought 80 megawatts of power to ensure Ghanaians watch the Black Stars semi-final match during the African Cup of Nations Tournament.

In April the same year, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) bought some more power to ensure Ghanaians enjoyed consistent power supply during the Easter season.

It is unclear how much money Ghana paid for the power supplied by Cote D’ivoire but there are concerns the various interventions by government is taking too long to address the country’s immediate power challenges.

After countless failed promises to end the four year old power crisis, government in the 2016 budget promised to add 800 megawatts to the national grid before close of the year.

Government said it was working on selected fast-track projects, two of which are the 250MW Ameri and the 225MW Karpower Projects.

Government said installation works are progressing steadily and the projects are expected to be commissioned before the end of the yearGovernment has again promised to add a total of 1,053MW to the existing installed capacity of the country in 2016.
