Ahead of the party’s primary, the former Minister of Trades and Industry is also lacing his boots to contest the presidential primary of the NDC.

He said he will run for president in 2020 if Mahama do not contest.

Speaking to Accra-based radio XYZ, he said "all of us appointed by Mahama have great respect for him. We all believe we have to grant him that opportunity."

According to him, "My view is that all such matters is for the collective… when the time comes I’ll take into account."

Ekow Spio Garbrah added that "Mahama has extraordinary leadership skills, very quiet and not extravagant in his dealings. Mahama really had his hands on top of every subject matter. He is a student of history and used that to his strength and was very good at extempore."

Speaking on the fortunes of the NDC, he said the party should be interested in fixing the problems that led to their defeat in the 2016 general elections.

"Let’s work together to fix that car first or the horse that may be lame or whatever allegory people want to use. Once it is done the best driver will be decided. At this state it is early," Dr. Spio-Garbrah said.

Names that have come up so far include the former Trade Minister, Dr Ekwow Spio Garbrah, former majority Leader, Alban Bagbin, current Minority leader and MP for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu, retired Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Professor Joshua Alabi and former NHIS boss, Sylvester Mensah.

Mahama is yet to declare his intentions whether or not to contest the 2020 flag bearer race of the NDC.
