The group, specialized in bridging the gap between parliament and the electorates, wants the committee to "summon regulatory authorities, organisations, and individuals involved in this matter for an open enquiry into the circumstances that led to the entry of the 5million litres contaminated fuel product into the market."

The call comes after the Bureau of National Investigations, the Ministry of Energy and the National Petroleum Authority cleared the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Limited (BOST) and its Managing Director (MD), Alfred Obeng, of any wrongdoing in the sale of the contaminated 5 million litres of fuel to Movempiina Oil.

The Ministry of Energy has formed a committee to to advice it on ways to prevent any future contamination of fuel at BOST.

Odekro says an enquiry into the matter will be an opportunity for “parliament to overtly demonstrate to Ghanaians that indeed, it holds fast and dear to its core mandate of representation.”

It continued: “The current move by the Ministry of Energy to probe into the matter will deny Parliament this opportunity, and rob the general public an appreciation of full dynamics of the investigation.”

Following claims by the Minority that the current MD of BOST funded the campaign of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odekro is also calling for a disclosure on the sources of funding for political parties.

“The frequency of strange occurrences like this matter that involve colossal amounts of money call for a full disclosure of the funding sources for political parties,” it said.

“Odekro believes this social accountability mechanism will put to rest suspicions of financial engineering schemes and outright ‘fund raising’ at the public expense, for political party gains.”

Odekro also slammed Members of Parliament for taking partisan positions in the contaminated fuel saga, saying it disempowers parliament

“Odekro is of the view that Parliament tend to act disempowered, when confronting issues of grave concern to Ghanaians,” it said, adding that: “The ensuing back and forth debate between the leadership of the two main political parties only portends a quest for political capital for partisan purposes, not development and justice for Ghanaians. Democracy is not all about elections!”
