Midwifery school sacks pregnant students from exams hall

A standoff ensued between students of the Gushegu Midwifery Training School and the authorities of the institution when the later asked pregnant students not to sit for on-going exams.

Sources suggest that the order was given by the principal of the Training School Rukaya Alhassan.

Confirming the incident to Accra-based Starr FM a lecturer from the school who spoke on condition of anonymity said the institution was only acting on orders from the Midwifery Council.

He added that this is not the first time pregnant students have been prevented from writing exams.

He explained that such students are usually expected to defer.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association has denied knowledge of such a law that prevents pregnant students from writing examinations.

The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association, Kwaku Asante Krobea said “I do not know of any law that prevents pregnant students from taking part in exams. What is happening at Gushegu is shocking.”

Attempts to reach the principal has yielded no results.

The school which was established in September 2012 aims to improve maternal and child health as well as reduce mortality rate in the Northern region.
