“We embark on a lot of corporate social responsibilities. We are not a profit-making institution so why should you tax us?” the 45-year-old former chairman of the Ghana Prison Council quipped.

The head Pastor of the Cedar Mountain Assemblies of God Church, Rev Stephen Yenusom Wengam has said that it is unfair to take tax from churches in Ghana.

According to the man of God, the extent of development churches have provided for the country is more than the tax they are expected to pay.

“Churches must not pay tax,” the preacher man told Starr Fm’s Bola Ray in an interview, adding that: “we do pay taxes already and our accounts departments take care of it. We are not a profit making body.”

He stressed that the church is not a money-making institution and therefore should not be made to pay tax.

Members of the Christian Council of Ghana which includes several denominations in the Christian faith have taken a stand against government’s decision to tax them off their tithes which they claim is not direct revenue.

The Council has its members from Charismatic, Pentecostal, Orthodox and other churches.

Rev Stephen Wengam is the host of "This Is Your Day", a family morning devotion program on an Accra-based radio station, Citi FM.
