Ghanaians who have missed the opportunity to do their national service in previous years and now wish to enroll to do the service will no longer be allowed to register at the various regional offices.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Executive Director of the Scheme, Dr. Michael Kpessa-Whyte.

According to him, "eligible applicants are required to personally submit their application letters to the head office of the Scheme in Accra from now till end of February, 2016 for validation, before they could be considered for the on-line registration."

The statement said "these new measures are being instituted to curb possible abuse of the system where previously, ineligible persons could enroll to do the service without any means of detection."

The NSS defaulters are being reminded that "all application letters must be accompanied by academic certificates or transcripts from accredited tertiary institutions attended, and evidence of application for deferment of national service from previous years."

The statement added that the National Service Act, 1980 (Act 426) makes it mandatory for every Ghanaian 18 years and above who has acquired a tertiary educational training, to fulfill national service obligation to the state.
