Graduates may soon undergo six months military training as part of their one-year national service.

The Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul said that the National Service Secretariat had already written to his office to allow the military training which was introduced to instill discipline in the youth.

The National Service Act allows service personnel to do two years of national service and six months of military training.

The country could not, however, continue with the programme due to lack of capacity and the reduction of the service period to one year.

But Mr Nitiwul said the government will ensure that training facilities for the Army, Navy and the Air force were equipped with the necessary resources to enable them to start the exercise.
