Army officer killed at Denkyira-Obuasi

The officer whose name has been given us Captain Maxwell Mahama of the 5 Battalion of Infantry at Burma Camp in Accra was dressed in civilian clothes

A Captain of the Ghana Armed Forces on detachment duties at Diaso in the Central Region has been lynched to death by the youth of the town.

According to reports, he was lynched because he was suspected to be an armed robber.

An alarm was raised by the residents, who had witnessed an armed robbery incident the night before and so were on alert for the armed men.

The officer whose name has been given as Captain Maxwell Mahama of the 5 Battalion of Infantry at Burma Camp in Accra was dressed in civilian clothes.

Other reports say the assemblyman of the area organised some youth in the town to beat him to death.

The Ghana Armed Forces has since confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.

However, scores of armed military personnel have been deployed to Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region as they mount a search for the residents who lynched the Captain.

A statement from the Ghana Armed Forces signed by the spokesperson for the Ghana Armed Forces, Col. Aggrey Quarshie said "a high-powered fact-finding team led by the Chief of Army Staff is proceeding to the scene of the incident to ascertain the facts of the case."

"We are not going to expect that they [troops] will go and be attacking the community, no…they are going there to protect the Chief of Army Staff." he said.

"We will leave the security agencies that are responsible for investigating such things to do that and we hope that all the culprits will be picked up and brought to book. So we expect the community members to help us arrest all the culprits," he added.
