Ghana National Fire Service Investigate Melcom Fire Disaster

Investigation has started on the fire outbreak that gutted Melcom’s warehouse around 3:30am on Saturday, January 3.

In an interview with Pulse.com.gh, the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Dr. Albert Brown Gaisie, called on the general public and industries to cooperate with the National Fire Service by abiding with its safety precautions during the harmattan season. He emphasized though the fire has been contained by the fire fighters, there is the need to investigate to ensure such tragedy will not reoccur. He added that fire outbreaks in the country in 2015 will drastically decrease if people improve their “safety culture.”

Fire fighters at the incident struggled to control the fire while trying to have access to the facility to put the fire out because according to them, the building has tilted from the roof and there was a possibility that it could cave in on them.

Meanwhile, the Public relations officer of Melcom Ghana Limited, Mr. Godwin Avenogbo has also rubbished reports by its staff alleging they called the fire service when it started but they only arrived after 6am. It is still unclear what caused the fire outbreak.

This is the fourth major fire outbreak this year. On Friday, January 2, there was another fire outbreak at a residence in Osu , Accra, which claimed the life of a 6 year old instantly while a 9 month old baby who sustained serious injuries died later at a hospital.
