DVLA to conduct exams in local languages

A Deputy Director of DVLA Kafui Semevor said that this is to ensure that all drivers obtain professional driving license even if they are not able to the exams, which is set in English.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has disclosed that it will soon begin conducting oral examination for drivers who are unable to read and write the English language.

A Deputy Director of DVLA Kafui Semevor told Accra-based Starr FM, that this is to ensure that all drivers obtain professional driving license even if they are not able to the exams, which is set in English.

“Twi, Ga, Ewe, Hausa are the languages chosen to ensure that people who can express themselves in these languages get to write the DVLA Test. After the implementation of the policy, people who speak Ga, Twi, Ewe & Hausa will be able to write the DVLA Test exams which will be in an audio form. With this reform, many of the drivers will benefit. There are a number of good drivers on our roads but they cannot read or write,” he said.

Some drivers who do not have command over the English language have had challenges writing the examination for acquiring a license because it is conducted in English.

The drivers have through their unions complained over the year and asked that the exams be administered in local languages as well.

An official of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union Kwame Kumah said if the proposed plan is made reality, it will benefit a lot more drivers.

“You don’t need a degree to be able to drive. People who are mostly not experienced get licenses because they can read and write and those who have the experiences but cannot read and write are deprived licenses. With this reform, many of the drivers will benefit. There are a number of good drivers on our roads but they cannot read or write.”
