The West Africa sub-region is dominated by French speaking countries while Ghana is bordered to the north, west and east by francophone countries.

This was made known by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta when he delivered President Nana Akufo-Addo's maiden budget on Thursday March 2, 2017.
He said: "Recognising that Ghana is surrounded by French speaking neighbours and in a region dominated by French speaking countries, Government will promote and popularize the teaching and speaking of French in Ghana and leverage our membership of ECOWAS / members of the francophone to facilitate trade and good neighbourliness.

He added: "We aim that French becomes a second language of our country to promote trade, commerce, business and interaction with our neighbours."
