Court fines 13 Delta Force members GH¢31,200

The 13 pleaded guilty to the offence of escaping from lawful custody, and were fined GH¢2,400 each by the Kumasi Circuit Court when they were arraigned before the court on Tuesday morning.

The court presided over by Ekow Mensah also charged the men to sign a bond of good behaviour for sic months.

Meanwhile,they have been remanded for two weeks and will reappear in court on April 20.

The 13 are Kojo Fosu Bamba aka Kojo Bamba, Awal Sadat Abubakar, Abubakar Sadiq Abuhammed, Jamil Issa, Hamza Mohammed, Salu Issahak, Akwasi Owusu, Kwabena Owusu, Kofi Kyei, Eggya Boadi, Salu Yussif, Yussif Salu and Kwaku Awortwe.

Background

Some members of Delta Force, a vigilante group associated with the governing New Patriotic Party, besieged the Kumasi Circuit Court and freed its members who were facing charges for attacking the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator.

Reports suggest that the group nearly assaulted the Judge, Mary Senkyire and also destroyed some court properties.

Thirteen (13) members of the group were detained after the group assaulted the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei.

Reports say only two police officers were on duty at the court at the time, with one of them being pregnant.

However, they managed to get the judge Mary Nsenkyire to safety, while Delta Force members vandalised property at the court.

Eight of those who aided in the escape were subsequently arrested by the police.
