800 Girl Students Share Six Pan Latrines

Over 800 girls of the Northern Senior School of Business in Tamale share a six pan latrine toilet facility.

Over 800 girls of the Northern Senior School of Business in Tamale in the Northern Region, share a six pan latrine toilet facility.

The facility was built about twenty years ago. According to the school's House Mistress, Mrs. Juan Bukari, the students take their turn in queues to use the facility. She said a classroom block which was closer to the toilet was pulled down because the pungent smell was a nuisance to the school.

The House mistress said “the longer distance from the girl’s dormitory to the toilet occasionally compelled some of them to ease in plastic bags especially at night and dumped them in the toilet the next morning.”

A high tension electricity pole is also directly opposite the toilet posing danger to students. The Headmaster of the school, Wilberforce Adam, said the school was a beneficiary of some GetFund projects which started for the past ten years but have not been completed.

The projects include a girl’s dormitory which should have places of convenience for the girls.
