Over 20 injured after students clash with police

The violence erupted after some of the students had gone to participate in a zonal inter-school sports competition at the Baba Yara stadium.

Over 20 students of the Kumasi Technical Institute have been seriously injured after clashing with police personnel in the Ashanti region late Tuesday afternoon.

The students, in the course of their jubilation, decided to block the road leading from Amakom roundabout to KTI.

Others were banging on cars of motorists and causing severe traffic. Police arrived at the scene and directed the students to use an alternative route for traffic flow.

But some of them failed to heed the call and the situation subsequently turned chaotic.

The police officers were said to have assaulted some of the students in the process.

The students, also in retaliation began to throw stones at the police who responded by firing tear gas and gunshots to disperse the students.

Many were injured in the process and are receiving treatment at the Anwiam hospital atAfful Nkwanta.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Tanko has told Pulse.com.gh that police have been deployed to the area to restore calm.
