Ghana has lost its sense of dignity - Rawlings

“We have destroyed the fundamentals of naturally earned respect and replaced it with the power of elected or assumed authority and find ourselves in the world of coercive power and money,” he said.

Jerry John Rawlings

“There was a time when we carried ourselves with so much dignity we did not need the coercive machinery of the handcuff or guns to our heads to do the right thing.”

Former President Rawlings made this known when a team from the National Road Safety Commission paid a courtesy call on him last Friday to lead the campaign against indiscipline on the roads.

The former President called on the NRSC to promote the sale of dashboard camcorders by the Road Safety Commission as the move could lead to the successful prosecution of traffic offenders.

He believes the poor quality of vehicles and tyres imported into the country without the necessary checks, as well as, the ineffective use of reflectors could lead to several crashes on the roads.

The former President argued that drivers responsible for the deaths on the roads should be prosecuted on manslaughter charges and sentenced appropriately.
