Ghana marked its 60th independence anniversary on Monday with colourful parade and according to the Ghana at 60 planning committee, "Ghanaians should expect a very modest and a very amazing" celebration.

The event which over the years starts at 8:00 am, this year however commenced after 10:00 am, while guests had been seated for hours.

In an interview on Accra-based Kasapa FM, Asiedu Nketia said "Even when the President arrived and started his address, I was expecting an apology from him and explaining that maybe there was a programme mix up, but there was no such thing.

"These days, the intensity with which the sun shines could have a negative impact on the school kids, and so I thought things would have been done quickly but the programme went beyond 1:00pm. Even soldiers fainted having stood still for more than five hours."

He said "The embarrassment on the day was too much, even the Vice President was affected. When the programme had ended and it was announced that he [Vice president] was leaving, he had to wait, standing on his feet for 15 minutes before his car could arrive to pick him.

"Again during the event, when the Chief Imam had been mentioned to do the Moslem prayer, we heard another announcement that the Armed Forces Imam, will do the same activitiy. Eventually we saw the Chief Imam stepping up to the podium to pray. Furthermore, before the Pastor who  had been announced to do the Christian prayer could get to the podium, we heard another pastor doing the prayer. All these were needless, our invited guests will see that we’re not organized as a people. This should never happen again."
