A relative of the victim, identified as Patrick Adenyo, argued that their relative worked at the Tema port and was not a criminal as was being suggested by the police.

According to them, Patrick was wrongly gunned down on Monday, May 8. The bereaved family is demanding an immediate investigation into the matter and punitive measures against the police who opened fire on Patrick killing him instantly.

“Yesterday at about 12am, I got a call that my relative had been shot. I came this morning and went straight to the police station but they directed me to the Main Harbour. I went there to see the crime officer and he told me information reaching them was that my brother went to steal somebody’s car and had a scuffle with the police resulting in the shooting. He told me if I had evidence that my brother was not a thief or armed robber, I should produce the proof. We are yet to meet as a family and decide on the next line of action,” Mr Attipoe, a family member of the deceased, narrated to the media.

Meanwhile, PRO of the Tema Regional Police Command, ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwa, has said the police patrol team had a distress call and rushed to the scene and saw Patrick and another gentleman trying to rob the car.

He said Patrick took to his heels but police caught up with him. In the process of handcuffing him, he engaged the police in a fight and snatched a rifle from one of the policemen prompting the other officer to open fire.
