Police in the Brong Ahafo region have arrested a 23-year-old woman from Berekum for attempting to smuggle 96 parcels of a substance believed to be cocaine to an inmate at the Sunyani Central Prison.
The incident happened last Tuesday when the suspect visited the convict, who is serving a 10-year jail term with hard labour for narcotic offences, the Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Prisons Service, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Johann Nartey, told the Daily Graphic.

ASP Nartey said that since the police had received a tip-off that the lady would visit the prison with cocaine, the police officers put the two under surveillance.
Sakina later left the prison yard and was found loitering around the barracks, looking agitated.
The police later found 96 pieces of the substance suspected to be cocaine wrapped in cigarette foils on her purse after a search.
Upon further interrogations, Sakina indicated that the parcels were given to her by a lady friend of the convict whom she claimed not to know.

ASP Nartey said attempts by the police to call the woman with whom Sakina had communicated proved futile.
Sakina has since been handed over to the Sunyani Divisional Police Command for further investigations.
