Ethnic conflicts between the Kokomba and Bassare tribes in the Northern Region have led to some schools and clinics being closed down.

Both tribes – found in the Tatale district in the Northern Region – have not been on good terms after allegations of bias towards the Kokombas was leveled against Paramount Chief of the area, Obore Gariba Yankosor.
The development led to students and nurses fleeing the township for fear of being attacked.

Speaking on the matter, Headmaster of Tatale E.P Agricultural Senior High School, Alhaji Mohammed Rahman said the unrest has made it impossible for teaching to prevail, disclosing that the situation “scared the teachers too”.
“They are having a DISEC meeting so we are waiting for the outcome. The PTA has assured us, so we hope to back by Sunday. It was the fear and panic in the town that scared the teachers too; if you are here and the students are leaving, what do you do”, Alhaji Rahman is quoted as saying by Ultimatfmonline.com.
Clinics in the locality have also been forced to close down after nurses refused to turn up for work.

The conflict began when certain protestors, believed to be Bassares invaded the palace of the Paramount Chief, Obore Gariba Yankosor and threatened to slaughter him.
The Konkombas replied in equal measure asking the national security to arrest anyone that was involved in what they described as an “illegal demonstration.”
The tensions escalated after it was rumoured that a man was found dead, leading to many people fleeing the town.
