Catholic priest shot to death by armed robbers

A Catholic priest and his brother have been killed by armed robbers in Ondo State.

The priest identified as Rev. Father Onyeka was traveling  with his younger brother, Obi Onyeka and were on Owo-Oba-Akoko road, Akoko Southwest Local Government area of the state when they encountered the armed robbers.

Speaking to journalists in Akure, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Wole Ogodo said the robbers were operating on the road when the victims rammed into them.

Ogodo who further explained that the deceased priest and his brother were travelling on the road on Toyota Highlander Jeep, the robbers came out of the bush and started shooting sporadically at their vehicle, said men of the command were on the trail of the hoodlums.

According to Leadership, he further explained that the robbers bullets hits the petrol tank of the vehicle and while driver was trying to escape , the vehicle caught fire and burnt the deceased.

It was learnt that the  police spokesman had stated that: “on getting the information of the incident, our patrol team quickly went to the scene to rescue the surviving driver and deposit the corpses of the deceased in a mortuary.”

An investigation by Leadership newspaper revealed that the reverend father and his younger brother were traveling from Lagos State to Ugbe-Akoko in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State on the fateful day to meet with members of their family who reside in the town.
