68-year-old Vilks has received threats to his life after he depicted Prophet Mohammed as a dog in 2007.
Three police officers were wounded in the attack and at least two people were reportedly carried away from the scene on stretchers.
Vilks, who managed to escape unharmed, was attending a debate on Islam and free speech at Krudttoenden Café in Denmark’s most populous city when the attackers invaded the area.
The French ambassador to Denmark, Francois Zimeray was also present at the meeting but was not hit by bullets.
The attack is reminiscent of the January 7 invasion of the offices of satirical French newspaper, Charlie Hebdo during which 12 people, mostly cartoonists, were killed.
