3 people have been killed in the increasingly worsening protest in Burundi over president Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term.

Al Jazeera reports that the latest casualties brings to 7 the number of people killed in unrest.

According to Al Jazeera reporter  Malcolm Webb, a grenade was thrown at protesters in the Cibitoke suburb of the city, killing 2 protesters.

He said further that "protesters say it was thrown by a man in civilian clothes who they believe to be a member of the ruling party's youth wing, known as Imbonerakure"

According to Red Cross's Alexis Manirakiza, 212 people have been wounded since April 26th when the clashes began.

President Nkurunziza seeks to return to power for a 3rd term, having been in power since 2005 after the end of the 12-year civil war in the country.

Critics strongly oppose Nkurunziza's bid saying it is unconstitutional and violates the hard-won Arusha accord gains which ended the country's 13-year civil war, but the president's supporters maintain that Nkurunziza was installed by the parliament as opposed to being elected directly by people, making him eligible for another term.
